Dances from the State of Veracruz
Presented by Ballet Folklórico de Detroit
The Mexican folklórico dance style of Veracruz is known for its technically challenging, fast paced dance steps. Lance Rodriguez and Ballet Folklórico de Detroit spent over five years rigorously training to bring these traditional dances to life for Detroit audiences.
Mexico is a melting pot of different cultural influences, much like the United States. Veracruz has several dance styles influenced by indigenous, African, and Spanish peoples. To expand their knowledge of the physically demanding postures and steps of Veracruz style dances, the ensemble works with folklórico maestra Ofelia Sanchez Gonzalez. Beyond the dances, history, culture, and costume are central to this community concert and showcase.
Today’s environment is one of open hostility towards immigrants, making it difficult for immigrants to feel safe in everyday life and even more difficult to express cultural pride. Beginning with only four dancers, Ballet Folklórico de Detroit has grown to nearly 50 active dancers bringing folklórico to over 100 students. Ballet Folklórico de Detroit was founded on the idea that through purpose and hard work, folklórico can embody the best traditions of Mexico’s people and places for the Detroit community.
